2007-08  Richard Drake is in his 13th year as assistant coach for CNU working primarily with the hurdlers. He has coached two National Champions and the DIII National Record Holder -- Bridget Cochran's 13.60 from 1998. Another of his charges, Casey Taylor, ranks #10 All-Time on the DIII List at 14.10. He added another All- American to his extensive resume in 2007 (Greg Bolton, Indoor 55m Hurdles).

Drake has coached many years with area high schools, beginning with old South Norfolk High School and continuing to positions at Granby, Maury, Manor, and Wilson high schools. He has produced a number of All-State athletes. He is a graduate of William & Mary where he received both his bachelors and masters degrees. He was a hurdler and relay member for William & Mary. He is retired from the Portsmouth school system where he was a Math supervisor and principal.
